Railway workers

These photographs were taken at the engine sheds in Wolverhampton a few days before the change over to diesel in 1966. They illustrate the strange relationship that built up between men and machine. Like steelworkers, railwaymen constructed a fond and complex relationship with the machine (or furnace). It was a relationship founded on craft and care, and a respect for power and alchemy.
