Apprentices

Get a trade! That was the advice working class parents gave their children as they prepared to enter the world of work.
A trade meant a job for life, and most importantly, security. Many companies ran apprenticeship schemes and most were very good. Others less so and at times became an excuse for cheap labour. But generally an apprenticeship was the best way to become a skilled worker. And with that status came dignity and pride. These photographs are from the GEC Apprentice School
in Witton, Birmingham,
1967.
